yarma

When the weather outside is frosty, we rely on our handmade goods up here on the farm...

Celebrating our listeners who have joined the CogKnitive 25 – , 50 –, and 75 – Bear Clubs for MBP. You can see who they all are right here. Great work!

Have YOU completed 25, 50, or 75 bears for Mother Bear Project? Send me your snail and a link to your Ravelry projects page, and CogKnitive will send you a special wristband to celebrate with you.

Add yourself to our CogKNITive Listeners Map.

The Annual CogKnitive Mother Bear project CAL/KAL is in progress until I get to Stitches West in late February. You can enter ANY bear that you have made since MARCH 2, 2012, BUT you MUST post it to the group NOW, even if you've already posted it. That way, I can easily find who wants to be entered for our prizes.

What's On My Hook/Needles/Spindle:

4 Ingedient Home-made Cough Syrup

My thanks to MSESHESTA, who posted this on Plurk from the Good Food Matters blog:

MAGGIE’S COUGH REMEDY

 ¼ teaspoon Cayenne
 ¼ teaspoon Ginger
1 Tablespoon Cider Vinegar (an organic one, like Bragg’s, is preferred.)
 2 Tablespoon Water
1 Tablespoon Honey (use a locally produced raw honey, if possible.)

Dissolve cayenne and ginger in cider vinegar and water. Add honey and shake well. Take 1 Tablespoon as needed for cough. Hoo-wee. Note: this doesn’t dissolve perfectly. Always shake well before using. If you make this in small batches as the recipe is written, there is no need to refrigerate. If you prefer, you may refrigerate this. It keeps as long as you need it. I like to make small batches (it is so easy to mix up.) and use it up in a just a few days.

Still in Progress:

The Tehachapi Project Shawl. In part one of the D chart section! Again! After I had to rip back to the last lifeline when the needle disconnected itself from the cable. But we survived and all is well.

Bear #27 for the CAL/KAL.

Scraptacular 3 and Son of Scraptacular (IV) are back on hold..

Bertha's Mad, Mysterious Mobius.  I needed a new skill. So much for knitting monogamy.

Dizzy Blondes:
What do I do with 10 pounds of cashmere right off the critter?

Finishing a random batt of silvery brown alpaca that I just had lying in stash--not one of my herd.

Strategy:
Hypersensitive folks: Work on not reacting with anger, even though you are feeling hurt more often than other people who do not have to deal with high sensitivity. Yeah, it's not fair.

Total Win.

Cinnamon Pear Jam. DH made it in grilled cheese sandwiches tonight: grilled sourdough with jam spread on it, then added havarti cheese. Wonderful.

As a side: steamed b sprouts, then sautéed them on butter with broccoli bits and crumbled bacon.

Excellent with a cheap white Sauvignon!

And I finished 3 bears for the CAL/KAL this evening.

Family Diva's Amazing Mustard

Mustard. You know you can't live without it. Yet it is so innocent and invisible, sitting there on the shelf of the fridge. Oh, and overpriced. Did I mention overpriced? Make your own, and you'll wonder why you ever bought it from a store and loaded with chemicals.

This recipe is courtesy of Sue, AKA FamilyDiva, who tells me it is an old family recipe. Her folks make this up every holiday and use it all before anyone has time to can it. I intend to remedy that last part.

Sue's Family Mustard
Ingredients:
Equal parts sugar and white flour
Dried mustard to taste
Apple cider vinegar to get consistency you like

Sue suggests:
1/4 cup sugr & flour
2 tsp mustard dried
2-3 TBLSP apple cider vinegar

This makes about 4 ounces or a very small canning jar's worth.

1. Get the canner ready before you make the recipe. WHen the bottles and lids are close to boil, turn off the heat and let them sit, covered, as you work this one out. Much of this is to taste.

2. Mix everything else, tasting as you go.

3. Place in jars. Ball book uses 10 minutes at sea level to can mustards. I am at 4K+ feet in the hills, so I let it go for 20 minutes. Frankly, I wonder if you even need to seal it, as it is so vinegar-laden, but go ahead and can it, if you want to make larger amounts to have on hand.

I promise you, it is GREAT!

Homemade Applesauce in My Crock Pot Tonight

"And what is the recipe?" you may well ask.

Ingredients:

A pile of tasty apples (i.e. skip the Red Delicious)
One slice lemon or orange or 1/4 juice 1 cup water
1 Tablespoon cinnamon
1 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp nutmeg

Peel and core apples. I only quarter them.
Place in slow cooker on low.
Add other ingredients.
Allow to cook overnight.
Awaken to house smelling simply divine.

Cans very nicely via water bath canning. I am at 4K ft, so I allow 25 minutes at the boil. I use pint jars and make this by the ton when apples are in season. Use organics where you can.

Pears alone make a very bland sauce, but I have used pears, peaches, nectarines, raisins and all sorts of mixes to make this. Always works

What's On My Hook/Needles/Spindle:

Still in Progress:

The Tehachapi Project Shawl. In part one of the D chart section!

Bear #27 for the CAL/KAL.

Scraptacular 3 and Son of Scraptacular (IV) are back in production.

Finished:

Mittens for the Little Guy whipped up from his choice of yarn and color--Vanna's Choice, honey--during last week's snow storm. I added initials and a cord crocheted to go through neck and arms of coat so that he cannot lose the mittens easily. This prompted a positive comment from the designer, Ann Budd!

Dizzy Blondes:

Finished a single from Red Fish Dye Works' 50/50 SF Merino and Silk on the Jensen.

Started a random batt of silvery brown alpaca that I just had lying in stash--not one of my herd.

Strategy:
Hypersensitive folks: when in doubt, stick to a routine and use the To-do list/Worry Workbook.

Something I Really Like:
My new bag from Namaste and the Loopy Ewe! The Mini-Messenger, which is anything but mini.
