#HOHOHO Here is the holiday gift for my son's wonderful teacher. It is a fleece from Pilgrim the alpaca, late herd-mate of my trio, handspun and crocheted by me into a Calm Cowl. #granolagirl #camelidranchingismysuperpower

In Progress: The OHM Shawl by Michelle Miller. It bit me. In time out.
Tutorial for the After-Thought Heel is here.

Sockhead Hat--Done in yarn from Dizzy Blonde Studios. I think the 4 inches of rib are worth it, personally.

#kniitersofinstagram One more inch of stockinette!!! Give me strength!!! One more inch!! Ten more rows...! #sockheadmadness

Gourmet Stash. Holy spit! Look at her shop! Go spin a puni on your drop spindle. Someone who really gets drop spindling!

Bourbon Barrel Cake Sock Yarn:

@gourmetstash SQUEEEEEE!!!! Look what came in the mail!! Bourbon Barrel Cake!!! SQUEEEEE!!!!

Strategy:

Mindful eating: Track your intake.

1. Counting calories is the easiest way.
2. Keeo measuring cups and spoons next to your cooking area and use them to track how much you use to cook.

Eat small forkfuls and finish one forkful and swallow before you put the next in your mouth. It's that easy!

Harvard Study on Effects of 8 Weeks of Meditation on the Human Brain.

Study of Oxygen Efficiency in Older Adults Who Jog.

Put a Lid On It:

Whenever you roast a bird, chop extra onion and celery while you are making your stuffing. Set the extra aside in the fridge.
After you finish enjoying your meal, strip the large bits of meat off your carcass. Don't strip it too clean; small bits left on will be flavoring.
Place carcass into crock pot on high with the extra onion and celery you previously set aside.
Add bay leaf as well.
Fill with water and let cook at least overnight; 24 hours max.
Strain through cheesecloth and you have lovely broth!

Aw Shoot!

A bit more about the Hero's Challenge Run for Troop 139 of the local Boy Scouts.

Lunging Roxy and voice training her.

Do your 5K/30 mins of exercise and donate $10 and YOU could win in this year's CogKnitive Holiday Hustle! Must be completed by December 31st! I will offer one prize for every 3 people entered.

Additionally, K8erpillar has offered the winner's choice of a set of stitch markers from her lovely Etsy shop.

Dizzy Blondes:

Nothing here this week.

Have I mentioned that I love bamboo blends for my warmer weather socks.

Strategy:

Please don't unintentionally or otherwise bring down the holidays for someone else. Don't be the dog in the manger.

Put a Lid On It:

Enjoying the pickled cherries at last! Dribble that pickling liquid over a fresh avocado or in your green salad for a wonderful treat.

Turkey broth:
Carcass of turkey after eating, stripped of larger bits of meat, little bits still clinging
bay leaf
Minced onions and celery
Baby carrots
Leftover meat from bird
Bowtie pasta
potato, chopped

Turkey carcass goes overnight in the slow cooker on high. Strain broth and discard bones. You can add the minced onions and celery and the bay leaf before or after cooking the bones. After straining broth through cheese cloth, add the remaining ingredients and cook for an hour or so on low.

Blather:
The Waver's Guild show at Torrance in November, followed by the Griffin Dyeworks Fiber Frolic in Monrovia.

Veranda Mediterranean Food in Monrovia--2 enthusiastic thumbs up!

Kamalei's Naturals--comparable to Lolo Bars, excellent price, nice range of scents, lip balms also available. Goes on nicely, lightly scented, nice range of scents.

Roxy gets a bit of review of her basic training. As I age, I realize that the way I train my dogs is not unlike the way I work with patients and is VERY like the way I train my pony. Positive reinforcement really works!

Doggie updates as we reach the 4th anniversary of the arrival of Blankets and the 3rd of the coming of Baron.

Review: A Head for Trouble by Julie Turjoman. Briefly: I love this book, but do be prepared for some finishing work by hand. Adorable patterns, great information on embellishments.

Tirion Du took me for a grand ride all over the neighborhood this morning. After, when she was cool, I tried spraying her with the hose and found--she likes it! That's why her neck is shining--she was frolicking in the wet in the 90 degree weather.

Put a Lid On It:

The kitchen is quiet, due to 100F heat.

Aw Shoot!
Still running indoors on the elliptical. Based on a recent study, running on the treadmill is only marginally better than using an elliptical to burn calories.

Summer Running Essentials:
Please remember to hydrate you and any running pals.
Important facts:

Any mammal can carry only up to one quarter of its weight.

Great news, Runners!

Excerpted from Medscape (a medical news service for health professionals)

Running for even 5 to 10 minutes a day, once or twice a week, or at slow speeds was associated with substantial mortality benefits over 15 years, a prospective study showed.
Runners overall had 30% and 45% lower adjusted risks of all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality, respectively, over that period and had 3 years longer life expectancy compared with nonrunners, Duck-chul Lee, PhD, of Iowa State University in Ames, and colleagues found.
..........

The associations were also significant at the lowest quintiles of weekly running distance (less than 6 miles), frequency (one to two times), amount (under 506 metabolic equivalent of task or MET-minutes), and speed (less than 6 miles/hour), the group reported in the August 5 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
.........

The effect of “just doing something at slightly higher intensity” was profound, commented Barry Franklin, PhD, director of preventive cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation in the Beaumont Health System in Royal Oak, Mich.
“A 30% to 40% reduction in mortality -- that’s huge. That’s equivalent to the same mortality reductions we get by taking a cholesterol-lowering statin or going on a beta-blocker or taking a statin,” he told MedPage Today.
The message that some is better than none is important.....
Running is clearly better than walking for the same amount of time in terms of mortality, although walking is probably safer and easier to sustain for those starting from zero, they noted.
.......
"Although devising a customized exercise prescription for each patient may sound complicated, 15 minutes of brisk walking or 5 minutes of running is all it takes for most clinic patients," they wrote.

Catching Up: Chicken with Cashews Recipe.

Catching Up: Chicken with Cashews Recipe.

I can't remember posting this, so here it is again for my Pinterest and blog followers.

Chicken with Cashews:
Ingredients:
2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thigh tenders or chicken breast tenders
1/4 cup all purpose flour
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 Tbsp canola oil
1/4 cup soy sauce
2 Tbsp rice wine vinegar
2 Tbsp ketchup
1 Tbsp brown sugar
1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 tsp grated fresh ginger
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
1/2 cup cashews
Directions:
Combine flour and pepper in large Ziploc bag. Add chicken. Shake to coat with flour mixture.
Heat oil in skillet over medium-high heat. Brown chicken about 2 minutes on each side.
Place chicken in slow cooker.
Combine soy sauce, vinegar, ketchup, sugar, garlic, ginger, and pepper flakes in small bowl; pour over chicken. Cook on LOW for 3 to 4 hours. Add cashews and stir. Serve over rice.
Makes 4-6 servings. If you want like sauce and want to have some to pour over the chicken and the rice, double the sauce ingredients.

Strategy:
Fear is the story that you tell yourself about a situation. Change the story, and the fear leaves.

Put a Lid On It:

Simple Beet Salad:
Red pickled beets
chopped white/yellow onion
Feta cheese.
Mix, chill, enjoy! No dressing needed.

It is pretty much pickling season for me. So far: pickled green beans, pickled red beets, and watermelon pickle. A book I like, but not for its watermelon rind pickles!

Aw Shoot!
